Speech Therapy
It ain't as easy as you think...but WORTH it!!
The volume of my speech was one of the 1st things to go. As I started to get quieter we tried several things; most of which included me trying to speak up, speak to clearly and repeat myself constantly. As I realized that this was a real problem I of course turned to technology. Voice amplifiers were 1st solutions tried, we tried several of these with little success.
Either the speaker was to close and cause a streaking noisw that was like nails on a chalk board, or the speaker was not close enough to me to arrange. Having the device set up and on, at the right times, was not an easy task and took a lot of planning or pre-thought (which is not great for a parkie!). Not to mention having both units (the microphone and the speaker) charged and figuring out an easy way to carry the items, always having them together.
After quite a long journey, I gave in and began speech therapy. The main thing I have to say about that, is be sure you are working with somebody who has experience with Parkinson’s. I cannot stress this enough you must have a therapy regimen that is tailored to you and your needs! This might sound cliché a waste of air, but it is very true.
The other catch to make the therapy successful, is consistency. Commit to this like your life depends on, and it really does. You must meet with the therapist every week, or as often as they suggest; and you have to practice! Daily practice and exercise for your vocal muscles and reading is the secret to success. We all want progress and success is really motivating, I have found with Parkinson’s everything is a fight. Don’t let this get the best of you and fight the good fight.
I learned a lot in speech therapy, I would like to think that I have achieved success but progress will have to do. Remember that this stupid disease is a marathon, not a sprint. This will be a long, if not lifelong, journey and I am ready for it. Bring it on!!
